So long are the days when temp employment is just an interim status for finding work between lay-offs and new job placement.  As the economy continues to change rapidly, so does the workforce.

After a complete economy shutdown, millions have found themselves filing for unemployment and searching for their next opportunity.

Did you know...

  • Temporary employment has been growing steadily for the last several years as the U.S. recovered from the last recession. Nearly 480,000 jobs were added from 2012 to 2019 with companies seeking more flexibility in how the staff and workers seeking greater control over when and where they work.
  • While temporary employment is relatively balanced among age groups, the majority (57 percent) of people working temporary assignments, or gigs, are ages 35 and older; 18 percent are ages 55 and older. The number one reason why people say they want to take on gig work is to earn extra income followed by the desire to get their foot in the door with a company

As both employers and employees come to a new comfort level with temp placement positions, the perks often out way the negatives in hiring short term.  With the ability to have increased flexibility of lifestyle, employees don’t mind the temp to temp-hire career path regardless of the stability a permanent hire position does offer.

“Many people build successful careers as temporary workers and don’t pursue permanent placement,” says Gilpin President of CareerBuilder’s Staffing & Recruiting Group.  ”They like the flexibility, and they like having a variety of work experiences.  Some workers prefer assignments within their wheelhouse.  Others like to try out new functions.  Either way, you get exposure to different learning opportunities.”

When it comes to hiring throughout and even after the massive shift in how our world operates following Covid-19, Entreprenuer.com shares one of the key ways to ensure you're at the top of every recruiter's list - by learning new skills to address the gaps to meet the realization and requirements of a post-Covid-19 job market.

How can I address skill gaps I have to meet the realities and requirements of a post COVID-19 job market? While learning new skills is always important and helpful, it is beneficial to be aware of and prioritize the skills and tools that will be in demand the most, both during and after the pandemic. Do I know what those skills are, or how can I figure that out? What is the best way to build those skills, and what are the best resources to use? Since there is a plethora of training providers and courses, how do I evaluate which learning options are the most relevant and conducive to help me advance- e.g. which ones are recognized in the industry, which has clearly defined and relevant learning objectives, etc.?
